Battery Recycling Industry
The Power of Recovery, Sustainability, and a Circular Future
With the rise of electric vehicles, consumer electronics and grid-scale storage, end-of-life batteries are becoming a major waste stream. India’s Battery Waste Management Rules make producers responsible for recycling, which is building a fast-growing industry around recovering lithium, cobalt, nickel, lead and other critical materials from both lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries.
The recycling process creates serious air pollution challenges. Discharging, dismantling, shredding and crushing release fine metal-laden dust, electrolyte vapours and, in some cases, hydrogen fluoride. Smelting and thermal routes emit lead fumes, acidic gases and particulates, while hydrometallurgical routes produce acid mists. As recycling volumes rise and environmental scrutiny increases, controlling these emissions is essential to running a safe and compliant operation.
